WHEN CAN YOU TOP AN OEM DESIGN?
Magnum gaskets feature the best designs for aftermarket engine repairs, which may be different than OEM installations. Some changes from OEM are to accommodate the surfaces of used engine components, while other differences address working conditions in the field compared to the factory. A good example is the GM 3.8L V6 oil pan gasket used in model years 1995 to 2005. It faces an especially difficult sealing task because of variability in the gap between the oil pan and engine block on used pans. OEM and Magnum both supply an oil pan gasket/ windage tray combination with molded silicone sealing beads on a nylon-filled composite carrier. Magnum’s OS21000 MaxDry SS gasket has a taller bead than OEM to compensate for greater gap variations. But the solution is not as simple as just making the bead taller. The “Void Volume” design (below) must accept the greater silicone bead volume when clamped. Magnum’s gasket experts precisely calculate the ideal bead dimensions and design them into the mold.

“DO’s & DON’Ts” of Oil Pan GASKETS
I’ve never had a customer who is happy to see the labor charge for replacing an oil pan gasket. The job is usually a “pain in the neck” (sometimes literally a pain in the neck) and professional technicians need to be paid appropriately for their time and effort. But I don’t have to tell you that a labor-intensive job, like changing an oil pan, is the last thing you want to have come back for a do-over. That’s why you need a high quality brand of oil pan gaskets designed by experts… Magnum Oil Pan Gaskets!

THE RIGHT DESIGN FOR EVERY ENGINE.
Over the years, oil pans have evolved from simple stamped steel pans into sophisticated engine components that play a major role in controlling the engine’s NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). At the same time, consumers have grown to expect “dry” engines, that don’t quickly look oily and dirty. In late model vehicles, the engine crankcase, oil pan and oil pan gasket are all designed to form a complete sealing and NVH system. The so-called gasket “die cutter” businesses of the past are not capable of producing late model oil pan gaskets.

Our “Super Sealing” Magnum MaxDry SS™ gaskets combine the best OEM-type “molded rubber-on-carrier” designs with excellent performance and value. These oil pan gaskets feature high-temperature silicone rubber seals precision molded on composite nylon carriers, which are manufactured from materials selected to meet SAE standards. For certain applications, Magnum supplies some oil pan gaskets that feature a flat metal carrier with edge-molded rubber sealing beads.

MaxDry Precision Molded Rubber Gaskets are designed with specific molded features that complement the channels, cutouts and so forth which are manufactured into today’s engine components. Compression limiters may be incorporated in the oil pan or may be part of the gasket design. And don’t think that all molded rubber gaskets are created equal… some gasket suppliers try to cut corners by skipping the “post cure” process during manufacturing. Magnum insists on post curing all our parts to ensure that every molded gasket we produce has exactly the physical properties needed so that it will seal for years and prevent those dreaded comebacks.

Traditional Gasket Materials
Hi Quality Cork-Rubber Material is the most frequent choice for engines that are designed for conventional gaskets. But there are major differences in quality and durability of cork-rubber materials on the market. Magnum Engineers insist on superior quality material that you can rely upon for years of dependable service on older engines. Only materials that meet Magnum’s high standards for sealability, compression set and heat resistance will ever find their way into a Magnum Gasket Set.
